you can trot out your latest talking points, your latest bon mots carefully considered and tested by all the bought and paid for think tanks and rustic, country fried focus groups. you can pull out your conventional wisdom about how and when this and that ought to be done and what and where such and such a thing must not be. i know how you naysayers are and i say "fie!" i bite my fist, sirs, and i bite it at thee -- i make no effort to hide the fact.

i've heard too much of your cynicism, your half-conscious ironies. i've been here too long to think anything of your little bits of cleverness, so simperingly offered as evidence of your sophistication, that famed "british wit." oh yes, i've seen it all, comrades, and i am not amused.

so i don't care what any of you say, how you might try to knock me down for stepping out of line, refusing to toe that proverbial party line, drawn so neatly in the sand by so many hands, over-wrung and over-wrought. i may find myself in the minority and, should that change, i might myself change so as to maintain my former condition, because that's what builds character: struggle. but character is something you'd know nothing about.

so don't get huffy when i tell you i don't give a damn what you think about the new york times. if you don't think classified programs ought to stay classified, i could care less. in fact, i think that's great. i hope one day that "opinion" of yours lands you in front of a military tribunal, because that's where traitors belong.

could care less? by martingale (4.00 / 2) #3 Sun Jul 02, 2006 at 06:56:19 AM EST
It makes me sad to see you stooping to such levels when you obviously took some pride in that rant. Could care less? Really? Why don't you, then? Why must you taunt your readers so? You could care less but this rant is not worth your time, eh? No, I must stand firm about this. For the negations, you understand.

But well done on the token foreign expression.

I'm pretty sure if what the NYT did isn't a crime, they are aiding and abetting a criminal at least.

bin laden by garlic (4.00 / 2) #7 Sun Jul 02, 2006 at 09:14:38 AM EST
Didn't the NYT (or one of those other commie papers) keep us from tracking bin laden by telling him that we were watching his satellite phone usage? In fact, it's probably their fault that we don't have him at this point.

I just skimmed the post and had trouble figuring out which side you were coming down on.  Be clear in your convictions.  We don't need more moderates polluting the world's binary moral divide.

I suggest adding more code words, like patriotism, flip-flop, up-or-down-vote, culture of life, family values and nine-eleven.

by way of explanation, by rmg (4.00 / 1) #12 Sun Jul 02, 2006 at 12:39:26 PM EST
i call this method front loading. essentially, you pack the beginning of the troll with ambiguous but apparently emotionally charged material, giving the mark no clue as to where you're going, but creating a context for the main point.

the main point, then, can be brief and simple, preferrably pulled from some existing discourse with which the mark is already familiar.

the mark is left to piece together what the fuck is going on. in order to make this more difficult, it is good to make the context material and the "main point" incompatible so that different respondants will have different takes. obviously, not all of them will bother, but you're still free to put other things in the context building section to draw bites unrelated to the main point.

this method is a reaction to the way biters all tend to say essentially the same things to a given conventional troll.

a good idea. by garlic (2.00 / 0) #15 Tue Jul 04, 2006 at 12:38:11 PM EST
People tend to make a lot of assumptions based on what you've said that don't have anything to do with what you actually said. I'm a big fan of "Can I ask a simple question, ...?"

Aqua Libra and Melon Lime Soup by Gully Foyle (4.00 / 4) #13 Sun Jul 02, 2006 at 03:16:44 PM EST
Ingredients

    juice of 2 limes
    1tsp arrowroot
    3 free-range egg whites
1 very ripe Ogen or Galia melon
    1 x 75cl bottle Aqua Libra

Method

1 Place the lime juice in a stainless steel saucepan, bring to the boil and stir in the arrowroot until dissolved.

2 Whisk the egg whites until stiff and carefully fold into the thickened lime juice. Freeze for at least 3 hours.

3 Remove the skin and seeds from the melon and liquidise the flesh with the Aqua Libra. Chill in the refrigerator.

4 Serve the melon lime soup in chilled soup plates with a scoop of frozen lime and egg white mixture floating in each.
